If the camera or microphone fails before recording
Stay in the setup stage until the check works. Confirm which camera and microphone are selected. Inspect the browser’s site permissions and the device’s privacy settings. Close another app that is using the equipment. Then follow the official instructions to retry the equipment check.
A permission change can require a reload during setup. This does not make reload a safe method during an active answer. If the problem persists, note the error and use HireVue support. Try another supported setup only when you can check it properly before continuing.
If the connection drops or you leave the page
Restore the connection and use the original invitation link to inspect the current interview state. HireVue’s practice FAQ describes return from the next question after an interview has started. It does not establish that every interrupted recording is recoverable or editable.
Read any status or error before selecting another action. Do not create a second application to obtain a new link. If you cannot continue, record the time, question stage, and error message. Contact platform support for the fault and the employer if the deadline or a new attempt is affected.
If you are interrupted or make a speaking mistake
For a brief noise, pause and continue if the answer is still being recorded. For a word error, correct it in a short phrase and return to the point. Do not spend the remaining time apologizing or restart the browser to remove a slip.
If the question is unclear, identify the task you do understand. State a short assumption where needed and give a relevant answer. There is no live interviewer in the recorded format to provide immediate clarification. Prepare to explain your reasoning without inventing facts.
A serious interruption may prevent a usable answer. Report the specific problem to the hiring company and ask what it permits. A retake is a request, not an entitlement. Do not assume that remaining attempts can be used after a response has been submitted.
Choose the right contact
HireVue provides the software and technical support. The hiring company controls a new attempt and the hiring process. Use the contact in your invitation or the company’s official careers site for employer decisions. Avoid sending a private interview link to a public forum.
- Platform error: Give support the exact message, device, browser, time, and stage.
- Deadline or access issue: Ask the employer for the action you need and explain why.
- Restart request: Ask the employer whether it will authorize another interview.
- Application status: Contact the hiring company rather than platform support.
Check submission and plan follow-up
Do not treat the last spoken answer as proof of completion. Wait for the upload and check the status. HireVue’s completion guide distinguishes “Interview In Progress” from “Interview Received.” Keep the confirmation details available if you need to ask about a missing submission.
The employer decides when to review and contact you. Use any timeline it provides. If the stated date passes, send a short follow-up with the role and submission date. If no timeline is given, use its published contact process rather than assuming a standard number of days.
For example: “I submitted my recorded interview for the analyst role on 9 October. Could you confirm whether any further action is needed from me?” Keep a technical incident report separate and include only the details needed to investigate it.
Worked examples
These are teaching examples. Use your own facts and decisions.
The interview stops with an error near the deadline.
Weak answer or plan
Please reset it. The site failed.
Improved answer or plan
At 14:10, the interview stopped during the upload stage with the message shown in my attached screenshot. I used a Windows computer and the current Chrome browser. The invitation now shows the interview as in progress. Could you advise how to continue? The deadline is today at 17:00.
Why this works
This fictional report gives the time, stage, setup, observed status, and deadline. Do not include a private access code in a public message. Technical support can investigate the fault; the employer decides a deadline extension or new attempt.
Put it into practice
Prepare an incident note
Rehearse a short report using a fictional problem. For a real incident, keep personal access details in the official support channel.
Notes are not saved or sent. They clear when you leave or reload this page. Copy any notes you need before you leave.
Check your work
- Have you described what happened without assuming the cause?
- Is this a platform question or an employer decision?
- Have you checked whether the submission was received?
