Can You Retake a HireVue Interview? What Happens Before and After Submission

Short answer: once a HireVue interview is fully submitted, you cannot retake it on your own. A second attempt at the whole interview has to be authorized by the hiring company, usually through a new invitation. Re-recording a single answer is different: whether that is possible depends on how the employer configured the interview, and if retakes are allowed, you use them before you submit that answer and move on.

Those are two separate situations, and mixing them up is where most of the conflicting advice online comes from. This page separates them.

Can you re-record a single HireVue answer?

Sometimes — but only if the configuration for your interview allows it. HireVue's own documentation describes the recording modes an answer can use: Spontaneous (no retakes), Single Take, one through five retakes, or Unlimited Retakes, which HireVue describes as the default recording mode.

That default is a software setting, not a promise to any candidate. There is no universal number of attempts a candidate should assume. The hiring company configures the interview, and HireVue shows candidates how many attempts they have before the real interview questions begin. Check the instructions screen and your invitation email carefully; they are the authority for your interview, not general guides.

Two practical consequences:

  • If a retake is available, treat it as part of the question's flow. You re-record before that answer is final.
  • If the screen shows a single take, that is the whole allocation. There is no hidden retry behind it.

How many attempts do you get?

There is no universal number of attempts a candidate should assume. The hiring company configures the interview, and HireVue shows candidates how many attempts they have before the real interview questions. That number can differ between two companies using the same platform, or even between two roles at the same company.

If your screen shows something like "2 attempts", that number applies to each question in that interview. What it never means is that you can restart the entire interview afterward. Those are different controls, owned by different people: attempts belong to the interview's configuration, and a full restart belongs to the hiring team.

For a fuller walkthrough of attempts per question, see our detailed guide to HireVue interview attempts.

Can you go back after submitting an answer?

In a one-way HireVue interview, generally no. Once you have recorded an answer and moved to the next question, you do not get to navigate back and replace it. The platform moves forward through the question list by design.

This is exactly where candidates get caught. "You can re-record" and "you can go back" sound like the same promise, but they are not:

  • Re-record: the answer is not final yet, and your attempt allowance allows another take. This is a normal part of the flow when the employer enables it.
  • Going back: the answer is already submitted, and you want another shot at a previous question. Most setups do not offer this, regardless of how many attempts you started with.

So if re-recording is available to you, the decision point is before you confirm an answer, not after. If you are unsure whether an answer was submitted, look at the on-screen confirmation rather than assuming either way.

Can you retake the entire HireVue interview?

Not by yourself. A full retake after submission is a different event from a re-recorded answer: it means starting the whole interview again, with its questions and timer reset, and producing a new set of responses for the recruiter to review.

That decision sits with the hiring company. If a recruiter decides a candidate should get a fresh attempt, for example after a serious technical failure, they can authorize it and typically send a new interview invitation. HireVue provides the platform; the employer controls the interview and its data, so it is the employer, not the platform's candidate support and not any prep tool, that can grant a do-over.

What this means for you:

  • There is no self-service button to restart a completed interview.
  • Asking HireVue's candidate support to "reset" your interview will not produce one, because support troubleshoots the platform rather than overruling the hiring team's process.
  • If a second invitation arrives, treat it as a fresh, complete interview, not a patch of your first one.

What happens if you have a technical problem?

HireVue's candidate documentation draws a precise line depending on when the interruption happens.

If you disconnect between questions: log back in with the same invitation link. You can resume the interview and pick up where you left off. Practice questions are never submitted to anyone, so setup problems there cost you nothing.

If you disconnect while answering a question: that response has most likely already been submitted. The individual question cannot be reset, so finish the rest of the interview rather than stopping, and contact the hiring company afterward if you believe the affected answer needs attention.

If the interview is already complete and something went wrong in an answer: submitted responses cannot be revisited, so the record stands unless the employer acts. Only the hiring company can authorize a complete retake, and if it approves one, the company sends a new interview link. HireVue support cannot authorize the retake; support helps candidates with technical problems on the platform, but the interview belongs to the hiring company.

Prevention still beats recovery: test your camera and microphone before you start, use a stable connection, and keep a charged device. HireVue also runs a Candidate Help Center for technical support during the interview itself.

What to do if you need another attempt

Work through this in order:

  1. Check whether the interview is actually finished. If you lost connection between questions, reopen the original invitation link and resume; if you were mid-answer when it happened, that response has most likely already been submitted, so continue from where the platform places you.
  2. Re-read the on-screen attempt information. If retakes are configured and you have not used your allowance, you do not need to ask anyone for anything.
  3. If the interview is submitted and complete, email the recruiter. Be specific: which question, what went wrong, roughly when.
  4. Accept the decision you get. If the answer is no, the submission stands as your response.
  5. Prepare properly for any new invitation you receive, and treat it as a complete interview from the first question.

One thing not to do: do not open a fresh invitation link after finishing, hoping it starts a new session. Follow the instructions your invitation gives you instead.

FAQs

Can you retake a HireVue interview?

Not on your own once it is submitted. A full retake must be authorized by the hiring company, which usually means a new interview invitation. Re-recording a single answer before submission is a separate matter that depends on the employer's setup.

Can you re-record your answer on HireVue?

Only if the configuration for your interview allows it. HireVue's platform supports several recording modes — no retakes, a single take, one through five retakes, or unlimited retakes — and the hiring company chooses which one applies. HireVue shows you how many attempts you have before the real interview questions begin.

How many attempts do you get on HireVue?

There is no universal number of attempts a candidate should assume. The hiring company configures the interview, and HireVue shows candidates how many attempts they have before the real interview questions. The attempt count on your screen is the only figure that applies to you.

What happens if I make a mistake in a HireVue interview?

If re-recording is available, redo the answer before you submit it and move on. Once an answer is submitted, you generally cannot go back and replace it.

What if I have technical problems during my HireVue interview?

If you disconnect between questions, log back in with the same invitation link and resume where you left off. If you disconnect while answering a question, that response has most likely already been submitted and the individual question cannot be reset — finish the interview, then contact the hiring company if needed. Submitted responses cannot be revisited; only the hiring company can authorize a complete retake, and if approved, it arrives as a new interview link.

Can HireVue customer support reset my interview?

No. HireVue support helps candidates with technical issues on the platform, but the interview belongs to the hiring company. Only the employer can decide to authorize a retake and issue a new invitation.
