HireVue Interview Setup Checklist: Room, Device, and Preparation

Prepare a quiet space, stable device, working camera and microphone, and reliable connection. Then complete the equipment check for your interview. Test the same setup you will use to record.

Make the room usable

Choose a place where you can speak without interruption. Tell people nearby when you need quiet. Check what the camera can see and what the microphone can hear. Remove private documents from the frame. A plain, usable space is enough; you do not need a studio.

Put light in front of you where possible. A bright window behind you can make your face difficult to see. Place the device on a stable surface near eye level and check the image. Keep water within reach. Choose a position you can hold comfortably for the session.

If your home is shared, plan around the quiet period that is available. A library room or another permitted private space can be an option. Check its internet access, privacy, and booking time before relying on it. Ask the hiring company about access needs if the available setup prevents you from taking part.

Check the complete recording setup

Use HireVue’s current device guide to check your device and browser. A browser that can display the invitation is not enough evidence that recording will work. Supported options and requirements can change, so use the official list rather than an old minimum version from a slide.

A short local recording can reveal a quiet microphone or poor framing. The HireVue equipment check then tests access in the interview environment. Both checks have a purpose. If the local recording works but the equipment check fails, inspect permissions rather than buying new equipment immediately.

  1. Charge the device and connect power where practical.
  2. Check the connection in the room where you will record.
  3. Close applications that use the camera, microphone, or unnecessary bandwidth.
  4. Silence notifications without disabling equipment needed for the interview.
  5. Record a short test. Speak at your normal volume and listen to the playback.
  6. Complete the interview equipment check and fix problems before starting.

Choose clothing for the role

HireVue recommends clothing suitable for an in-person interview for that position. The choice depends on the role and company. A suit is not a universal platform requirement. Choose clean, comfortable clothing and check it in the camera image.

If a pattern flickers in your test recording, use another item if available. Comfort helps you focus on the answer. You do not need to copy another candidate’s appearance or make claims about clothing that an AI will reward.

Prepare the answer materials too

Read the job description and identify two or three responsibilities. For each, choose a true example from work, study, volunteering, or another relevant activity. Use short reminders for rehearsal rather than a script to read word for word.

Check the employer’s rules before using notes in the real interview. Keep the invitation and support contact available. If you need an accommodation, request it before the deadline. Last-minute equipment changes can create new problems, so test any change before continuing.

Worked examples

These are teaching examples. Use your own facts and decisions.

Your local test shows a dark face and noisy sound.

Weak answer or plan

I will speak louder during the real interview and hope the image improves.

Improved answer or plan

I will move the light in front of me, identify the source of the noise, and make a second test with the same microphone. I will start only after I can see and hear the answer clearly.

Why this works

The improved plan changes a specific cause and verifies the result. Speaking louder alone does not fix the frame or a competing noise source.

Put it into practice

Run a setup rehearsal

Use the checklist above in your planned room. Enter any unresolved item and a specific next action. These fields are temporary.

Notes are not saved or sent. They clear when you leave or reload this page. Copy any notes you need before you leave.

Check your work

  • Is your voice clear at normal volume?
  • Does the equipment check work in the interview environment?
  • Have you checked the deadline and notes policy?
