PathFinder is a spatial puzzle in which pieces are moved until they create a continuous route between two endpoints. The task rewards seeing constraints before acting.

What is directly documented

The 2022 Frontiers study gives PathFinder a concise definition: move pieces to create a path between two endpoints. The research version lasted five minutes. The independent audit also lists PathFinder among HireVue's cognitive ability games.

Public sources do not establish that every version uses one empty space, the same tile set, or a specific penalty per move. Treat those interface details as version-dependent and use the tutorial shown before your task.

Begin at the endpoints

Endpoints are the strongest constraints because the route must enter or leave them in a limited direction. Before moving anything:

  1. note the direction available at the start;
  2. note the direction required at the finish;
  3. identify pieces that can legally continue each end;
  4. locate narrow areas where only one route shape fits.

This creates a skeleton. Filling the middle without that skeleton often produces an attractive path that cannot connect to the finish.

Classify pieces by function

Mentally group route pieces as straight segments, corners, junctions, or blockers according to the version displayed. Scarce pieces deserve attention first. If there is only one corner that can satisfy a constrained turn, avoid using it in a flexible part of the board.

Plan a short move chain

Moving the correct piece into the wrong temporary position can trap the board. Before the first action, visualize two or three moves: which piece enters the open position, what space that creates, and which piece uses it next.

You do not need to solve the entire puzzle in your head. A short valid chain is enough to prevent random shuffling.

Recheck connectivity, not appearance

After each planned sequence, trace the route from the start until it breaks. Look for:

  • a path opening into a wall;
  • two adjacent pieces whose lines do not meet;
  • a loop that never reaches an endpoint;
  • a required corner used elsewhere.

Fix the first break rather than repeatedly scanning the whole board.

Practice with a move log

Record total moves, reversals, and dead ends. A reversal means undoing a move that did not contribute to a new plan. Reducing reversals is a clearer training target than racing the clock from the first session.

Once the route-planning method is stable, add timing. If speed practice increases reversals, return to endpoint analysis.

Scoring caution

The Frontiers paper discusses cognitive scoring across game batteries but does not publish a PathFinder pass threshold or guarantee that the employer simply counts completed boards. Avoid claims that one particular level or minimum-move solution determines selection.
