HireVue Singularity Game: Rules, Timing and a Better Scan Method

Learn the documented Singularity task, what public research says about timing, and how to build a repeatable odd-one-out search routine.

Singularity is an odd-one-out attention task. You see a group of similar visual items and select the single item that breaks the pattern. That simple rule becomes harder when the display adds distractors and reduces the number of obvious differences.

Unlike many online descriptions, this definition is directly supported by peer-reviewed research involving HireVue's game-based assessment.

Evidence-backed task profile

The 2022 Frontiers study describes Singularity as an attention task in which the player finds a unique shape among increasing numbers of distractors. It also notes that the target has fewer unique features as difficulty rises. The studied version lasted three minutes and ran on desktop or through the HireVue mobile app.

That paper does not publish a fixed grid sequence, a guaranteed number of rounds, or a rule saying orientation can never matter. Those details should come from the examples shown before your own attempt.

Why candidates lose time

The hardest part is usually not knowing what an odd item is. It is switching between two kinds of search:

  • a quick global glance when the difference is visually strong; and
  • a deliberate feature-by-feature comparison when the distinction is small.

Randomly revisiting shapes creates duplicate work. Staring at one candidate item for too long can be just as costly.

Use a two-pass scan

Pass one: identify the dominant rule

Before clicking, ask what almost every item shares. It may be an outline, color arrangement, fill, number of components, or relationship between parts. Naming the common rule turns the task from “find something strange” into a specific comparison.

Pass two: sweep in a fixed path

Move left to right by rows, or clockwise from a corner. Compare each item against the dominant rule. Keep the path constant across practice rounds so you can tell whether faster results come from a better method rather than lucky spotting.

If two items look suspicious, compare only the feature that separated them from the majority. A full visual reinspection wastes time.

Accuracy and progress both deserve attention

HireVue's current product page says games can be randomized and adaptive, with candidates moving forward or backward according to performance. Public research does not reveal the production scoring formula for Singularity. It is therefore safer to optimize controlled throughput—correct decisions at a sustainable pace—than to chase clicks per second.

After practice, record three numbers: attempts, errors, and the feature type behind each error. If most mistakes involve small internal details, slow only the second pass. If they occur at the start of a new display, spend a fraction longer identifying the dominant rule.

A compact practice sequence

  1. Complete one untimed round and describe the shared feature before every choice.
  2. Repeat with a fixed scan direction.
  3. Add the timer only after the rule errors fall.
  4. Stop after a few focused rounds; fatigue makes visual search noisy and teaches careless clicking.

This training is for rule familiarity and search discipline. It does not guarantee a specific assessment score or hiring result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you do in HireVue Singularity?

You identify the one shape that differs from a field of distractors. Published research says later items can include more distractors and fewer distinctive target features.

How long is the Singularity game?

A peer-reviewed study documented a three-minute version. Treat that as evidence for the studied version, not a guarantee that every employer configuration in 2026 uses the same timer.

Does a rotated item count as different?

Do not apply a universal shortcut. Rotation may be a distractor or a relevant feature depending on the displayed rule and item design. Use the examples in your own instructions to determine what counts as the difference.

Is the highest level the same as the employer score?

No public source establishes that. HireVue research on cognitive games shows that models can combine multiple behavior features, so a visible level should not be treated as a universal pass score.
