Numerosity is a target-number mental-arithmetic task. A set of numbers and an operation are shown; you select the combination that produces the target through addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

The documented version

The peer-reviewed Frontiers study describes a three-minute Numerosity game. Difficulty and progress are not summarized by one public candidate score. In the study, gameplay features included final and maximum level, levels won and lost, total levels played, and win ratio.

Numerosity final level was one of the most important features in that paper's combined Numerosity-and-ShapeDance model. Errors also mattered: levels lost and win ratio were related to the modeled assessment score. This supports balancing speed with accuracy; it does not reveal the formula used in every live employer assessment.

Addition: search around the target

For two-number addition, scan for a large value and immediately compute its complement. If the target is 17 and you notice 9, search for 8 rather than testing every pair.

With more than two selections, start from a convenient partial sum—often 10, 20, or another round number—then solve the remaining gap. Keep a running total instead of restarting the expression after each choice.

Subtraction: identify order before values

Subtraction is directional. Translate the prompt into “larger minus smaller equals target” unless the interface demonstrates another rule. Then look for pairs separated by the target. For a target of 6, 14 and 8 are a candidate pair because their difference is 6.

Avoid selecting two numbers merely because they add to the target; switching operations under pressure is a common rule error.

Multiplication: use factor families

Memorize basic factor pairs instead of trying arbitrary products. For 36, think 4×9 and 6×6. For 42, think 6×7. If more than two values can be selected, break the target into small factors and confirm the interface permits that number of selections.

Prime recognition also saves time. If a target is prime, a multi-factor solution using positive whole numbers is limited unless 1 is available.

Division: reverse it into multiplication

For a target of 4, search for a pair where the larger number is four times the smaller. This turns division into a familiar fact-family lookup. Confirm operand order before committing.

A better error log

Label mistakes as one of four types:

  • operation switch;
  • arithmetic fact not recalled;
  • valid pair overlooked;
  • rushed selection or input error.

Each type needs a different remedy. More general practice will not fix a repeated operation-switch error as efficiently as pausing to name the operator at the start of every round.

Rules about aids

Numerosity is described in research as mental arithmetic, but public documents do not support a universal statement that every employer version explicitly bans calculators or scratch paper. Read the assessment instructions. Do not use an external aid unless it is clearly permitted.
