Wells Fargo HireVue Interview: The On-Demand Screen, Questions and Prep

Many Wells Fargo applicants are asked to complete an On-Demand Screen (ODS): a recorded video interview in which pre-set questions appear on screen and you record your answers on your own, with no interviewer watching live. Candidates often call it the "Wells Fargo HireVue". This guide covers what Wells Fargo itself says about the ODS, the questions worth preparing and how to practise.

Candidate Falcon is independent and is not affiliated with Wells Fargo or HireVue. The questions below are preparation themes, not leaked or confirmed Wells Fargo questions.

What Wells Fargo Says About the On-Demand Screen

From Wells Fargo's careers FAQ:

  • Some positions require it. Not every role includes an ODS.
  • It is a preliminary interview. You record video responses to pre-set questions.
  • It runs on a third-party vendor's platform. The vendor emails you the instructions, and Wells Fargo asks you to follow them as quickly as possible.
  • Assessments are separate. Some roles also have screening assessments, and Wells Fargo says an assessment result is generally valid for six months.

Wells Fargo's own pages do not name the vendor. If your invitation comes from HireVue, the platform's rules apply as set up for your interview; otherwise follow the instructions in the email you received. Wells Fargo also says its interview process varies by business group, so the steps after the screen depend on the role.

Check That the Invitation Is Genuine

Wells Fargo's recruitment scam alert says it never interviews on free or consumer chat platforms such as Google Hangouts or Discord, that live video interviews use approved enterprise platforms such as Microsoft Teams, and that recruiter emails come from an @wellsfargo.com address. Treat anything else with suspicion.

How a Recorded Video Interview Works

On most one-way video platforms, including HireVue:

  • Each question shows its timing before you start: how long you have to think and how long you can talk.
  • Retakes depend on the employer's settings. Some questions allow a re-record, some do not. Read the on-screen instructions every time.
  • There is usually a practice question so you can check your camera, microphone and the recording flow.

Wells Fargo HireVue Questions to Prepare

Wells Fargo does not publish its ODS questions, and they differ by business group and role. Prepare examples for these themes:

Motivation

  1. Why do you want to work at Wells Fargo?
  2. Why are you interested in this role and this business group?
  3. Walk me through your background and what led you to apply.

Customers and judgment

  1. Tell me about a time you helped a customer or client with a difficult problem.
  2. Describe a time you had to explain something complicated in simple terms.
  3. Tell me about a time you noticed a mistake or a risk that others missed.
  4. What would you do if you were asked to bend a rule to meet a deadline?

Teamwork and delivery

  1. Tell me about a time you worked in a team to reach a goal.
  2. Describe a time you handled several priorities at once.
  3. Tell me about a time something did not go to plan. What did you do?

Self-awareness

  1. What is your greatest strength, and how would it help in this role?
  2. What is a weakness you are working on?

Finance roles

  1. Tell me about a recent business or market story you have followed, and why it matters.
  2. How would you explain what this team does to someone outside finance?

For banking roles, questions 6 and 7 deserve real preparation. Banks care about accuracy and integrity, and a calm example of catching a problem early is often more convincing than a story about working fast.

How to Answer "Why Wells Fargo?"

Avoid general praise of the bank. Instead:

  1. Name the business group and the role you applied to.
  2. Give one specific reason it fits you: the kind of customers, the type of work or something you learned about the team.
  3. Connect it to an experience that shows you would be good at it.

Keep it to about a minute. A focused answer beats a long one.

How to Practise for the Wells Fargo On-Demand Screen

  1. Prepare five real examples you can adapt: helping a customer, teamwork, a mistake, catching a problem and handling pressure.
  2. Outline them with STAR in bullet points, not a script.
  3. Record yourself with a timer on the device you will use, and watch back one answer at a time.
  4. Do the invitation promptly. Wells Fargo asks candidates to follow the vendor's instructions as quickly as possible, so do not leave it to the last day.
