Bank of America HireVue Interview: Timing, Questions and Tips

For most Bank of America student and graduate programs, the online application has two parts: the application itself, with your CV and some competency questions, and a recorded video interview on HireVue. Bank of America says both must be finished by the application deadline. Unusually, the bank also publishes the timing and what it looks for, which makes this one of the easier HireVue interviews to prepare for properly.

Candidate Falcon is independent and is not affiliated with Bank of America or HireVue. The questions below are preparation themes, not leaked or confirmed Bank of America questions.

What Bank of America Says About the Video Interview

From Bank of America's student application-process page:

  • Length: the interview takes about 20 to 30 minutes, so tell the people around you not to disturb you.
  • Timing per question: 30 seconds to prepare and up to three minutes to respond. The bank says to expect to use at least 1 minute 45 seconds per answer.
  • Question type: fairly typical interview questions, mainly behavioural and open-ended, sometimes about your projects or experiences.
  • No follow-up questions: nobody can ask you to expand, so explain how and why you did something, not just what you did.
  • Notes are okay: you can write down points you want to cover, but the bank does not want a scripted answer read from the page.
  • Interruptions: if something interrupts you, keep going. The bank says it wants to see you work through distractions.
  • Practice first: you get time to practise before the real questions; use it to get comfortable with the HireVue platform.

The bank also says what it looks for: students who are eager to learn, intellectually curious, team players and genuinely interested in the program.

What the Timing Means for Your Answers

Three minutes is longer than many HireVue interviews allow, and "at least 1:45" sets a clear expectation. A 30-second answer will look thin. In practice:

  • Use the 30 seconds to pick one example and the two or three points you want to make. Do not try to plan every sentence.
  • Aim for roughly two minutes. That leaves room for the situation, what you did, why you did it, the result and what you learned.
  • Fill the "why". Because there are no follow-ups, add one or two sentences on your reasoning: why you chose that approach and what you would do differently.
  • Finish cleanly. End on the result or the lesson, rather than trailing off when the timer gets close.

Bank of America HireVue Questions to Prepare

Bank of America describes its questions as typical, behavioural and open-ended. Prepare examples for these:

Motivation

  1. Why Bank of America?
  2. Why this program and this line of business?
  3. Tell me about yourself and what led you to apply.

Behavioural examples

  1. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team. What was your role?
  2. Describe a project you are proud of. What did you do, and why?
  3. Tell me about a challenge you faced and how you handled it.
  4. Describe a time you had to learn something new quickly.
  5. Tell me about a time you made a mistake and what you learned.
  6. Describe a time you had to manage competing priorities.
  7. Tell me about a time you went beyond what was expected of you.

Curiosity and interest

  1. What is something you have taught yourself recently, and why?
  2. What do you know about the work of the team you applied to?
  3. Tell me about a business or market story that interested you recently.

Questions 7, 11 and 12 map directly onto what Bank of America says it looks for: eagerness to learn, intellectual curiosity and genuine interest in the program.

Setup and Delivery Tips From Bank of America

  • Treat it like an in-person interview and dress professionally.
  • Choose a well-lit room with no distracting backdrop or echo, away from busy areas, with a strong Wi-Fi connection.
  • Look at the camera rather than the screen, and speak clearly.
  • Practise likely questions beforehand and ask someone you trust for feedback on your delivery.

Check That the Invitation Is Genuine

Bank of America's recruitment scams page lists its approved interview platforms as HireVue, Teams, Webex and Zoom. An interview invitation through anything else is a warning sign.

A Practice Plan for the Bank of America HireVue

  1. Write five real examples covering teamwork, a project, a challenge, a mistake and learning something quickly.
  2. Outline each in bullet points, including a "why" line, since nobody can ask a follow-up.
  3. Practise with the real timing: 30 seconds to think and about two minutes to answer. Record yourself and check that you reach the result before the time runs out.
  4. Ask someone you trust to watch one recording, as Bank of America suggests, and fix one thing at a time.
