Target HireVue Interview: How the Recorded Video Interview Works
Candidate Falcon
Editorial Team

Some Target business areas use a recorded video interview on HireVue: the invitation arrives from HireVue, you watch a short introduction, then answer a series of questions on camera in your own time. Target publishes a clear guide to this step, so most of what you need to know comes straight from Target. This article sums it up and adds the questions worth preparing.
Candidate Falcon is independent and is not affiliated with Target or HireVue. The questions below are preparation themes, not leaked or confirmed Target questions.
What Target Says About Its Recorded Video Interview
From Target's "Recorded Video Interviews" careers page:
- The invitation comes from HireVue, from the address interviews@hirevue.com, with a subject line congratulating you on being selected to interview with Target.
- Practise as much as you like. Target says there is no limit on practising, and practice answers are never uploaded or submitted to anyone.
- Watch the introduction video carefully. You cannot replay it.
- You can re-record answers, and Target only sees your final recording.
- But you cannot retake the interview. Target does not allow retakes of recorded video interviews once completed.
- Plan for about 30 minutes, and check how much time each answer allows.
- Do it promptly. If you do not complete it in a timely manner, you will no longer be considered.
- On a computer, use Chrome. Technical help is available from the HireVue Candidate Help Center around the clock.

What Happens After You Submit
Target says a recruiter or hiring manager watches your video responses, and you should hear back within five business days. If it has been more than ten days, contact your recruiter.
Use Your Own Words
Target's interview guidance says your answers must reflect your own understanding and judgment, without help from AI-generated content. Prepare with notes and practice, but answer in your own words.
Target HireVue Questions to Prepare
Target does not publish its questions, and they depend on the business area. Prepare real examples for these themes:
Motivation
- Why do you want to work at Target?
- Why this role and this team?
- Tell us about yourself and what led you to apply.
Guests and service
- Tell us about a time you made someone's experience better than they expected.
- Describe a time you dealt with a frustrated customer or colleague.
- Tell us about a time you noticed a problem in a process and fixed it.
Teamwork and pace
- Describe a time you worked with a team under pressure to hit a deadline.
- Tell us about a time you had several priorities at once. How did you decide?
- Describe a time you had to adapt quickly to a change.
Growth and leadership
- Tell us about a time you received feedback and what you changed.
- Describe a time you took the lead, formally or informally.
- What is a strength you would bring to this team?
Using Re-Records Wisely
Target lets you re-record, but only your final recording counts. That changes how to use them:
- Watch your take before you re-record. If it answers the question clearly, keep it.
- Re-record for a clear reason: a missing result, a long rambling start or a technical problem, not to chase perfection.
- Never assume the next take will be better. Your last recording is the one Target sees, even if an earlier one was stronger.
How to Practise for the Target HireVue
- Prepare five real examples you can adapt: helping a customer, teamwork, a change, feedback and leadership.
- Outline them in bullet points using STAR, and practise out loud.
- Use HireVue's unlimited practice inside the invitation to check your camera, sound and timing.
- Block out 30 to 40 quiet minutes and finish the interview soon after you receive it.
Our HireVue interview practice simulator lets you paste the Target job posting and generate matching questions, with a think-time countdown, up to three takes in Practice mode, and AI feedback on the relevance, clarity, structure and concision of each answer.
