Morgan Stanley HireVue Interview: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Candidate Falcon
Editorial Team

Many Morgan Stanley applications include a recorded video interview: you see each question on screen, get a short countdown, and record your answer with nobody on the other side. Candidates who search for a "Morgan Stanley HireVue" usually have an invitation from HireVue, the platform that runs these interviews. This guide covers what Morgan Stanley's own recruiters say about recorded interviews, the questions worth preparing, and how to practise.

What Morgan Stanley Says About Video Interviews
Morgan Stanley's careers article "10 Tips for a Successful Video Interview" says that more roles, including in its North America and Asia offices, require a video interview as part of the application and screening process. Its pages describe recorded video interviews without naming the platform, so rely on your invitation for the exact setup.
The article is a few years old, but its advice from Morgan Stanley recruiters still fits a recorded interview well. The main points:
- Do your homework. Recorded sessions give you limited time to show what you know. Learn about the job and the firm; for finance roles, a recruiter suggests this is where you can show your current knowledge of the markets.
- Do not read from notes. A recruiter calls it the most common bad habit: it sounds rehearsed, and your eyes moving across a page are distracting on video. If you want reminders, put a sticky note at eye level next to the camera.
- Practise several times. Practise with a friend or in front of a mirror, record your dry runs and review them to see what to fix.
- Read the rules before you start. Recorded-interview platforms show the time limits and how many times you can re-record.
- Short is fine. You do not have to use all the time; concise answers are best.
- Set up properly. Test your equipment and connection, choose a quiet room with a neutral background, put light in front of you rather than behind, place the camera just above eye level, dress professionally and close other programs.
How the HireVue Interview Itself Works
The employer sets the rules for each interview:
- Think time and answer time are set per question, with a countdown before recording starts.
- Retakes depend on the recording mode: unlimited retakes, one to five retakes, a single take or no retakes. If you re-record, the recruiter sees your last take, not your best one.
- A practice question comes first. Practice answers are not saved or seen by anyone but you.
Morgan Stanley HireVue Questions to Prepare
Morgan Stanley does not publish its video interview questions, and they differ by division and region. Prepare examples for these themes:
Motivation
- Why Morgan Stanley?
- Why this division (for example investment banking, sales and trading, wealth management or technology)?
- Why do you want to pursue a career in finance?
- Walk me through your resume.
Behavioural examples
- Tell me about a time you worked in a team to reach a goal.
- Describe a time you took the lead without being asked.
- Tell me about a challenge you faced and how you overcame it.
- Describe a time you made a mistake. What did you do next?
- Tell me about a time you had to persuade someone.
- How do you handle several deadlines at once?
Markets and commercial awareness
- Tell me about a recent market or business story you have followed, and why it matters.
- What do you think is a major trend affecting the industry right now?
- How would you explain the work of the division you applied to in simple terms?
Self-awareness
- What is your greatest strength, and how would it help you in this role?
- What is a weakness you are working on?
How to Answer the Markets Question
Morgan Stanley's recruiters point to market knowledge as something you can show in the video, so prepare one story properly rather than skimming headlines the night before:
- Pick one story you have followed for a few weeks, ideally connected to the division you applied to.
- Explain it in two sentences: what happened and why it matters.
- Add your view: what you think happens next, or who wins and loses.
- Link it to the role: how someone in that division would be involved.
Practise saying it out loud in under two minutes. If the story changes before your interview, update it.
A Practice Plan for the Morgan Stanley HireVue
- Write five real examples you can adapt: teamwork, leadership, a challenge, a mistake and persuasion.
- Outline them with STAR, in bullet points rather than a script, so you can speak without reading.
- Rehearse "Why Morgan Stanley?", "Why this division?" and your markets story until each sounds natural.
- Do recorded dry runs, as Morgan Stanley's recruiters recommend, on the same device and in the same room as the real interview, and review one thing at a time: content, then pace, then setup.
