JPMorgan HireVue Interview: Questions, Format and How to Prepare

For many JPMorganChase programs, the first interview is a recorded HireVue interview: questions appear on screen and you record your answers alone, with no interviewer on the other side. The firm's own careers handbook describes it as the first of two interview rounds. This guide covers what JPMorganChase says about that round, the questions worth preparing, and how to practise.

Candidate Falcon is independent and is not affiliated with JPMorganChase or HireVue. The questions below are preparation themes, not leaked or confirmed JPMorgan questions.

What JPMorganChase Says About the HireVue Round

JPMorganChase's careers handbook, Find your path, describes a recruitment journey with two interview rounds:

  1. Virtual assessment: a first-round recorded virtual interview hosted on HireVue, and/or a HackerRank assessment for technology roles.
  2. Interview: one or more interviews, held virtually and/or in person depending on the program.

The firm's hiring FAQ adds a few practical points for on-demand video interviews:

  • You can use a laptop, desktop or mobile device, but it needs a working camera and microphone.
  • You get a set window of time in which to record your responses.
  • Business attire and a quiet, distraction-free space are recommended.

Not every role uses the same process. Your invitation is the final word on deadlines, the number of questions and the timing.

How the HireVue Interview Itself Works

The employer, not HireVue, chooses the settings for each interview:

  • Think time and answer time are set per question. A countdown runs before recording starts.
  • Retakes depend on the recording mode the employer chose: unlimited retakes, one to five retakes, a single take, or no retakes at all. If you re-record, the recruiter sees your last take, not your best one.
  • A practice question comes before the real ones. Practice answers are not saved or seen by anyone but you.

Read the on-screen instructions before each question. They tell you exactly how much time you have and whether a retake is possible.

JPMorgan HireVue Questions to Prepare

JPMorganChase's own interview tips tell candidates to be ready for questions about their academic background, strengths, weaknesses and career goals, and to be clear about why they chose the role. That gives you a reliable core to prepare:

Motivation

  1. Why do you want to work at JPMorganChase?
  2. Why this program, and why this line of business?
  3. What do you hope to learn in this role, and how do you want to grow?
  4. Where do you see your career in a few years?

Background and self-awareness

  1. Walk me through your background and how it led you to this application.
  2. Tell me about a class, project or piece of research that is relevant to this role.
  3. What is your greatest strength? Give an example of it in action.
  4. What is a weakness you are working on?

Behavioural examples

  1. Tell me about a time you worked in a team to meet a tight deadline.
  2. Describe a challenge you faced and what you did about it.
  3. Tell me about a time you made a mistake and how you handled it.
  4. Describe a time you had to learn something new quickly.
  5. Tell me about a time you had to balance several priorities at once.

Role knowledge (business and markets roles)

  1. Tell me about a recent business or market story that caught your attention, and why it matters.
  2. What do you think makes someone successful in this role?

Structure Your Answers the Way JPMorganChase Suggests

The handbook offers two simple structures:

  • Context, Action, Result: what was the challenge, what did you do, what was the outcome.
  • SHER: Situation (what was happening), Hurdle (what got in the way), Endgame (what you did to get past it) and Reflection (what you learned).

SHER works well in a recorded interview because the Reflection step answers the follow-up question nobody can ask you. Keep the Situation to one or two sentences and spend most of your time on what you did.

For "Why JPMorganChase?", avoid general praise. Name the program and the part of the business you applied to, give one specific reason it fits you, and connect it to something you have already done. Research the program first: the handbook's first interview tip is to understand why you want to be part of it.

What JPMorganChase Asks You Not to Do

The handbook's list of interview don'ts is unusually direct. Do not:

  • use software to generate answers during the interview, unless you are invited to use an AI tool as part of an exercise;
  • use examples that are not from your own experience;
  • read from notes or pre-written documents;
  • fabricate or exaggerate;
  • go off on tangents; keep answers concise.

In a recorded interview these matter even more, because the recording can be watched again.

How to Practise for a JPMorgan HireVue

  1. Write your examples first. Pick four or five real experiences you can adapt: a team project, a challenge, a mistake, something you learned quickly and something you led.
  2. Outline, don't script. Three or four bullet points per example, following Context, Action, Result or SHER.
  3. Record yourself with a timer. Use the same device and room as the real interview, and watch back one answer at a time.
  4. Practise the motivation questions out loud. "Why JPMorganChase?" and "Why this program?" sound very different spoken than written.

Our HireVue interview practice simulator lets you paste the JPMorganChase job posting and generate an interview built around it, with a think-time countdown you cannot pause, limited takes and AI feedback on the relevance, clarity, structure and concision of each answer. JPMorgan HireVue: FAQs

Does JPMorgan use HireVue?

Yes, for many programs. JPMorganChase's careers handbook describes the first round as a recorded virtual interview hosted on HireVue, with HackerRank used for technology roles. Some roles use a different process, so check your invitation.

How many questions are in the JPMorgan HireVue?

JPMorganChase does not publish a fixed number, and the employer can set it per interview. Your invitation and the on-screen instructions show the count and the timing.

Can I retake a JPMorgan HireVue answer?

It depends on the recording mode chosen for the interview. Some questions allow retakes and some do not. If you re-record, the last take is the one that counts.

Can I use notes in the JPMorgan HireVue?

JPMorganChase's tips say not to read from notes or pre-written documents. A few keywords to jog your memory are different from reading an answer; keep your eyes on the camera and speak from memory.

What happens after the HireVue?

If you move forward, the second round is one or more interviews, held virtually and/or in person depending on the program.
