Goldman Sachs HireVue Interview: Format, Questions and Preparation

At Goldman Sachs, the first interview for student programs is a recorded video interview on HireVue. Goldman Sachs says it takes about 30 minutes, and candidates who are selected afterwards move on to the Superday, a series of final-round interviews. This guide covers what the firm says about the HireVue stage, the questions worth preparing and how to practise.

Candidate Falcon is independent and is not affiliated with Goldman Sachs or HireVue. The questions below are preparation themes, not leaked or confirmed Goldman Sachs questions.

Where the HireVue Fits in the Goldman Sachs Process

Goldman Sachs' student "Prepare" page sets out the steps after you apply:

  • First interview: if your application is selected, you are asked to complete a video interview, which takes about 30 minutes.
  • Engineering: engineering applicants are also asked to take a HackerRank coding assessment.
  • Superday: if you are selected after the HireVue interview, you are invited to final-round interviews. For campus hires, Goldman Sachs typically holds two to five interviews, depending on the division.

Goldman Sachs also says you will hear from it when it receives your application, with a status update later in the season, and at the end of the season, whether or not you are offered an interview.

Check That the Invitation Is Genuine

Goldman Sachs' recruiting scams page says the firm interviews only through its approved platform, HireVue, or a Goldman Sachs account on Zoom, and never through video chat rooms. If an "interview" arrives through anything else, or anyone asks you for money, treat it as a scam and contact the firm through its official careers site.

How the HireVue Interview Itself Works

The settings come from the employer's interview, not from HireVue in general:

  • Think time and answer time are set for each question, and a countdown runs before recording starts.
  • Retakes depend on the recording mode: unlimited retakes, one to five retakes, a single take or no retakes. If you re-record, the recruiter sees your last take.
  • A practice question comes before the real ones, and practice answers are not saved or seen by anyone but you.
  • AI scoring, where used, looks at the transcript of what you say, according to HireVue, not at your face or tone of voice. The content of your answers is what to practise.

Goldman Sachs HireVue Questions to Prepare

Goldman Sachs does not publish its HireVue questions, and they can differ by division and region. Prepare examples that cover these themes:

Motivation and fit

  1. Why Goldman Sachs?
  2. Why this division, and why this location?
  3. Walk us through your CV and the choices that led you here.
  4. What do you expect to learn in this program?

Teamwork and leadership

  1. Tell us about a time you worked in a team that was under pressure.
  2. Describe a time you led a group, formally or informally.
  3. Tell us about a disagreement in a team and how it was resolved.

Judgment and resilience

  1. Describe a challenge you faced and how you dealt with it.
  2. Tell us about a time you failed or made a mistake.
  3. Describe a decision you made with incomplete information.
  4. Tell us about a time you had to manage several deadlines at once.

Commercial awareness (business and markets divisions)

  1. Tell us about a recent market or business story that interests you, and why.
  2. What do you think are the main challenges for the division you are applying to?
  3. How would you explain what this division does to someone outside finance?

Ethics and judgment

  1. How would you handle a situation where you were asked to cut a corner to meet a deadline?

How to Answer "Why Goldman Sachs?"

This question appears in some form in almost every bank interview, and generic answers are easy to spot. A stronger answer has three parts:

  1. The division, not the brand. Say which division you applied to and what it actually does for clients.
  2. One specific reason. Something you learned from a Goldman Sachs event, a conversation with someone at the firm, or the program itself. Goldman Sachs runs virtual and in-person events through My GS Events, which give you material that is genuinely yours.
  3. The link to you. One experience that shows you would be good at that work.

Keep it to about a minute. You do not need to use every second of the answer time.

A Practice Plan for the Goldman Sachs HireVue

  1. Build a bank of five examples: a team project, a leadership moment, a challenge, a mistake and a time you learned something quickly. Most behavioural questions can be answered with one of them.
  2. Outline each with STAR. One sentence for the situation and task, most of the time on your actions, then a clear result.
  3. Prepare your division answer out loud. "Why Goldman Sachs?" and "Why this division?" are usually where candidates sound least natural.
  4. Record yourself under time pressure. Use the device and room you will use for the real interview, then watch back one answer at a time and fix one thing.

Our HireVue interview practice simulator lets you paste the Goldman Sachs job posting and generate an interview built around it, with a think-time countdown you cannot pause, limited takes and AI feedback on the relevance, clarity, structure and concision of each answer.
