EY HireVue Interview: What EY Says and How to Prepare

EY uses HireVue in its hiring: its privacy notice for the tool covers HireVue digital interviews, CodeVue coding assessments and HireVue cognitive assessments. For many candidates, the HireVue step is a prerecorded video interview, and EY's own interview tips say exactly how it judges the answers. This guide covers what EY says, the questions to prepare and how to practise.

Candidate Falcon is independent and is not affiliated with EY or HireVue. The questions below are preparation themes, not leaked or confirmed EY questions.

What EY Says About HireVue

EY's privacy notice for its "Digital Interview and CodeVue Tool" says it uses HireVue for three things:

  • Digital interviews: recorded video answers to interview questions.
  • CodeVue: coding assessments for technical roles.
  • HireVue cognitive assessments: to assess cognitive aptitude.

The notice says person-to-person interaction and human decision-making remain part of the process.

EY's US early careers guidance adds that its interviews may include prerecorded video, live video and case study interviews, and that skills assessment invitations usually arrive within one business day. Processes differ by country: EY UK's student application process, for example, describes a realistic job preview, a behavioural skills test and an EY Experience Day, without a video interview.

How EY Judges Your Answers

EY's US interview tips are unusually direct about recorded interviews:

  • Answers are measured against three things: a relevant experience, the action you took and the result.
  • EY is not looking for perfection.
  • You do not have to use all the time for each question.
  • Do not wait until the deadline to complete your video.
  • Prepare 10 to 15 examples you can draw on.

That maps directly onto the STAR method: a short situation, then most of your time on your action, then a clear result.

How the HireVue Interview Itself Works

The settings come from EY's interview, not from HireVue in general:

  • Think time and answer time are set per question, with a countdown before recording starts.
  • Retakes depend on the recording mode chosen for the interview. If you re-record, the recruiter sees your last take.
  • A practice question comes before the real ones.

EY HireVue Questions to Prepare

EY does not publish its questions, and they vary by service line and country. With 10 to 15 examples ready, as EY recommends, you can cover these themes:

Motivation

  1. Why EY?
  2. Why this service line (for example assurance, tax, consulting or strategy and transactions)?
  3. Tell us about yourself and why you are applying now.

Teamwork and clients

  1. Tell us about a time you worked in a team to deliver something on a deadline.
  2. Describe a time you built trust with someone you had just met.
  3. Tell us about a time you explained something complex to someone outside your field.

Problem solving and judgment

  1. Describe a problem you solved with limited information.
  2. Tell us about a time you noticed an error and what you did.
  3. Describe a time you had to balance competing priorities.

Growth and leadership

  1. Tell us about a time you took the lead on something.
  2. Describe a mistake you made and what you changed afterwards.
  3. Tell us about a time you learned a new skill quickly.
  4. What feedback have you received recently, and what did you do with it?

How to Practise for the EY HireVue

  1. Write 10 to 15 short examples, as EY suggests, each with a relevant experience, your action and the result.
  2. Group them by theme so you can find the right one quickly during the think time.
  3. Record yourself with a timer and check that every answer reaches a clear result.
  4. Complete the real interview early, not on the deadline day.
