DigitSpan presents a short string of characters, removes it, and asks you to reproduce the sequence. HireVue research specifies letters or numbers and includes both forward and backward recall.
The research-backed format
A HireVue SIOP paper describes DigitSpan as a gamified version of the digit-span sequencing task in the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. The study version lasted three minutes. The independent I-O audit places it in the cognitive game category and reports that cognitive games are generally interpreted as batteries rather than isolated measures of one narrow skill.
Candidate accounts also confirm alphanumeric sequences in real assessment settings. They are useful for checking the experience, but their reported levels or item counts are not universal benchmarks.
Forward recall: preserve order first
Chunking can reduce the number of units you actively manage. Instead of holding 5–7–2–8–4–9 as six separate digits, group it as 572 and 849, or 57–28–49. Use the same chunk size until the sequence length forces a change.
Do not turn every chunk into an elaborate story. The display is brief, and creating a mnemonic can take longer than the sequence itself.
Backward recall: reverse the chunks too
If the sequence is 572–849, the correct full reversal is 948–275, not 849–572. Reversing only chunk order is a common mistake.
Two methods work well in practice:
- Visual placement: imagine each character occupying a fixed position, then read the positions from right to left.
- Stack method: mentally place each new character on top of the last, so the newest is retrieved first.
Test both outside the assessment and keep the method that produces fewer order errors.
Separate memory errors from input errors
After a practice miss, ask whether the sequence was forgotten, reversed incorrectly, or entered inaccurately. A typing slip does not require more memory training. Slow the transition from recall to input and check which control the interface expects.
Practice progression
- Establish a forward span at which you are consistently accurate.
- Practice that same length backward before adding characters.
- Mix letters and numbers so the character type is not a surprise.
- Randomize forward and backward instructions and name the direction before encoding.
- End when recall quality drops; fatigued repetition rewards guessing.
No universal target level
Public sources do not establish that seven, nine, or any other length is a passing standard.
