HSBC Job Simulation and Online Immersive Assessment: What to Expect

After you apply to an HSBC graduate, internship or insight programme, the next step is one or two online assessments. HSBC's own pages call them online assessments built on real-life scenarios. Its candidate preparation hub, marked "Powered by Cappfinity", names them the Online Immersive Assessment and the Job Simulation.

This guide explains what HSBC says about each one, how long they take, what device to use, how results work and how to prepare.

Where the online assessments fit

HSBC's process for students and graduates usually runs:

  1. Application form. About 10 to 15 minutes. You can apply to only one programme, and HSBC reviews applications on a rolling basis, so programmes can close early.
  2. Online assessment(s). One or two stages, depending on the market and programme.
  3. Assessment centre or, for insight and work experience programmes, usually an online interview.
  4. Offer.

Engineering and cyber roles add a coding assessment. HSBC does not name its provider, and it is separate from the assessments in this guide.

What the assessments are like

HSBC describes its online assessments as experiences built on real-life scenarios. According to HSBC's transcript, FAQs and application guide, you can expect:

  • Information sources like those you would use at work: graphs, data tables, mock emails and written articles.
  • Audio or visual content as part of some questions.
  • Short written and video responses.
  • Different question formats across the assessment.

HSBC's application guide says the assessments are time-recorded, and that the video responses are time-limited.

The Online Immersive Assessment

When we read HSBC's Candidate Zone in October 2026, it described the Online Immersive Assessment as untimed, and said to allow about 50 minutes. It also said the assessment introduces you to HSBC's culture.

"Immersive" in Cappfinity's assessments means behavioural and reasoning questions mixed together inside a realistic scenario. You might read an email and a data table about a client, then answer a question about what you would do next and another that needs a calculation from the table. The behavioural questions typically ask you to rank or choose responses; the reasoning questions have correct answers.

The Job Simulation

The Candidate Zone described the Job Simulation as about 30 minutes. It is more behavioural: you respond to work situations, including with video answers. Some programmes use a single combined Simulate assessment of about 60 minutes instead of two stages.

How long they really take

HSBC's sources do not quite agree, so plan for the longest estimate:

SourceWhat it says
HSBC transcript and FAQs"Each assessment will take around 40 minutes"
HSBC application guide90 minutes for the online assessment
HSBC Candidate Zone (October 2026)Immersive about 50 minutes, untimed; Job Simulation about 30; Simulate about 60

Your invitation tells you which assessments you have and the deadline.

Device and setup

HSBC strongly recommends a laptop or tablet rather than a phone, because you need to review different information sources side by side. Video answers need a webcam, and there is a system check before the video questions. HSBC also suggests having a pen, paper and a calculator ready.

Other things that help:

  • A quiet room where you can record video without interruptions.
  • A stable connection, and other tabs and notifications closed.
  • Enough time to finish without rushing, especially if you have two stages.

Accessibility and adjustments

HSBC's application guide lists the accessibility built into the assessments: screen-reader tested, captions and transcripts for all audio and video, zoom, a minimum 16px font, keyboard-only navigation and charts that do not rely on telling colours apart. You request other adjustments on your application form.

Results and feedback

HSBC says you get the outcome of your online assessment within a couple of days. Building the interview shortlist can take a couple of weeks or longer. HSBC also says you receive developmental feedback by email at each stage.

HSBC does not publish a pass mark. For what Cappfinity-style feedback reports contain, see Cappfinity results and the strengths feedback report.

After the online assessments

For most graduate programmes the next step is an assessment centre. HSBC says it is mostly virtual and usually runs for about three hours, with breaks. For insight and work experience programmes, stage three is usually an online interview.

How to prepare for the HSBC online assessments

  1. Check how many stages you have and plan around the longest time estimate.
  2. Use a laptop or tablet, as HSBC recommends, and test your webcam before the video questions.
  3. Practise reading several sources at once. Get used to finding the one figure that matters in a table or chart, and to cross-checking an email against the data.
  4. Revise basic workplace maths: percentages, ratios, averages and percentage change, with a calculator. Cappfinity-style reasoning questions are time-recorded, so work steadily.
  5. For behavioural questions, answer as you would really act. Cappfinity advises not to second-guess what the employer wants.
  6. Prepare short video answers. Have examples ready of teamwork, solving a problem, helping a customer and learning something quickly, and practise answering within a time limit.
  7. Know why HSBC and why this programme. It comes up again at the assessment centre.

Candidate Falcon's Cappfinity-style immersive assessment practice puts you through a working week at a fictional employer, with emails, tables and charts in an inbox and a mix of behavioural and reasoning questions. It leaves out audio, video and written answers, and it is an independent simulation, not HSBC's or Cappfinity's assessment. For the video answers, the HireVue interview practice simulator lets you rehearse timed recorded answers with feedback; it is built for HireVue, but the camera skills transfer. Our strengths-based interview questions article and the HSBC interview questions page help with what to say. Playing the simulations needs one of our plans; see pricing.

FAQs

What platform does HSBC use for its online assessments?

HSBC's own pages do not name it. Its Candidate Zone (hsbc.preparationplus.com) is marked "Powered by Cappfinity", and its data notice says it runs on systems operated for HSBC by Cappfinity Limited.

How long is the HSBC online assessment?

HSBC's transcript and FAQs say each assessment takes around 40 minutes; its application guide says 90 minutes. In October 2026 its Candidate Zone said about 50 minutes for the Online Immersive Assessment and about 30 for the Job Simulation.

Is the HSBC immersive assessment timed?

HSBC's Candidate Zone said it is untimed. HSBC's application guide says the assessments are time-recorded and the video responses are time-limited, so do not leave long gaps.

Can I take the HSBC assessment on my phone?

HSBC strongly recommends a laptop or tablet instead, because you need to look at several information sources, and you need a webcam for video answers.

When will I get my HSBC online assessment results?

HSBC says within a couple of days, with developmental feedback by email. Shortlisting for interviews can take a couple of weeks or longer.
