What the Token Search task tests

Token Search is a memory task. Prep sites describe a set of boxes in which you search for a hidden token, one token at a time. Once a token has been found in a box, no later token will be hidden there, so you must remember where tokens have already been found and where you have already looked. Sources describe it as untimed with three lives.

The mechanics match a classic research task of the same name, also called spatial search, which measures spatial working memory: holding and updating locations in mind while you search. Arctic Shores does not publish its version or how it is scored, so the details of timing and scoring may differ from what is described here.

How the Token Search practice works

  1. Open boxes one at a time by clicking or tapping them until you find the token.
  2. After each token, search again: the next token is in a box that has not held one yet.
  3. Opening a box twice in the same search, or opening a box that already held a token, costs a life and restarts that search size.
  4. Find a token in every box to complete a search. The next search has one more box, up to 10.
  5. The run ends when you lose your third life or complete the 10-box search. There is no timer.
  6. Review your largest completed search, the kind of mistakes you made and how many boxes you opened per token.

Token Search tips

  • Search in a fixed order every time, such as left to right and top to bottom, so you do not lose track.
  • Keep a mental list of boxes where tokens were found and skip them in every later search.
  • Remember which boxes you have opened in the current search, and reset that list each time you find a token.
  • Take your time. The task is reported to be untimed, so accuracy matters more than speed.
  • Group boxes into areas of the screen to make them easier to remember.

Common Token Search mistakes

  • Opening a box that held a token in an earlier search.
  • Forgetting which boxes you have already checked in the current search.
  • Searching in a different order each time.
  • Rushing because there is no clock.

A short Token Search practice routine

  1. Do one run and note which mistake type cost you lives.
  2. In the next run, use one fixed search order throughout.
  3. Track the largest search you complete across sessions.
  4. Check your invitation for the exact rules of your version.

Token Search FAQ

How does the Arctic Shores Token Search task work?

Prep sites describe finding hidden tokens one at a time in a set of boxes, without rechecking boxes, with three lives and no time limit. Arctic Shores does not publish the rules.

What counts as a mistake?

In the classic version of this task, a mistake is looking in the same box twice before finding the current token, or opening a box where a token was already found. Candidate Falcon’s practice uses these rules.

Is Token Search timed?

Prep sites describe it as untimed, with typical completion estimated at about 4 to 7 minutes.

Should you practise for Arctic Shores?

Arctic Shores says you do not need to practise and should respond naturally. Practice can make the rules familiar. Candidate Falcon does not claim it changes your Arctic Shores results.

Arctic Shores does not publish its task list, so task names and mechanics on this page come from candidate reports.
